According to comprehensive foreign media reports, Hyundai Heavy Industries held a launch ceremony for the first Chungnam-class frigate at its headquarters in Ulsan on Monday. It was named after South Korea's coastal province "Chungcheongnam-do". The name of the first ship is ROKS Chungnam.

South Korea is expected to build six Chungnam-class frigates, with a length of 129 meters, a width of 15 meters, a full load displacement of 4,300 tons, and a maximum speed of 55 kilometers per hour.

The Chungnam-class is equipped with four fixed array radars as standard, capable of 360-degree all-round detection, tracking and response. Compared with the frigates currently in service, its air defense capability can be said to be greatly enhanced.

The main gun of the Chungnam ship is a 5-inch "Mk 45" naval gun, and it is equipped with a 16-unit "KVLS" vertical launch system. Range missiles, including a variety of surface-to-air missiles.

It is worth mentioning that the Chungnam-class has applied a hybrid propulsion system for the first time, and its low-noise feature is expected to reduce the risk of exposure; in combat situations, it can start the powerful Rolls-Royce "Rolls-Royce MT30" gas turbine, Sail at full speed with a maximum cruising speed of 30 knots.

The Chungnam ship launched on Monday is expected to be delivered to the South Korean Navy by the end of next year (2024) after testing, evaluation and electrification.
