Belarusian director
Andrei Gnyot
has been held in a Serbian prison for the fifth month.
About three dozen public activists came to the Embassy of Serbia in Warsaw on Ruzh Alley.
They held the placards "No extradition!", "Freedom to Andrei Gniet" in Serbian and Belarusian languages.
Paval Latushka,
the head of the National Anti-Crisis Administration, spoke at the picket
.
Paval Latushka
"Belarusian director Andrei Gnyot is being held in a Serbian prison.
Serbia is a country that is moving towards democracy, which is on the way to membership in the European Union.
I think that this will not be a bump in the road on which the Serbian people are walking.
Because if Serbia really strives for democracy, it must understand that today in Belarus the Belarusian people are being tortured, humiliated, thousands of people are kept in prisons.
At least five police prisoners have already died in Lukashenka's prisons.
We must fight for every Belarusian who is in prisons.
Andrei Gnyot, unfortunately, is in a European prison - in Serbia.
We will fight for him," says Paval Latushka.
Priest
Vyacheslav Barok
noted in his speech that Andrey Gnyot is not a commodity, but a person, and there is no need to trade him.
Father Vyacheslav Barok
"I appeal to the authorities of Serbia to treat Andrey Gniet as a person who has honor and dignity and has rights.
The authorities of Serbia must be guided by the law, and their duty is to release the Belarusian director."
The participants of the picket chanted in Belarusian and Serbian: "Freedom to Andrei Gniet!".
The event was organized by the Belarusian organization "Rukh".
This is already the second picket held by Belarusians near the Serbian embassy in Warsaw.
You can sign a petition for Ghniet's release online.
Andrei Gnyot was arrested at the Belgrade airport in October 2023, on the basis of an Interpol warrant issued at the request of Belarus.
Gniet did not know that a warrant was issued for him, he came to work in Serbia.
He lived in Thailand, where he fled after taking part in protests following the 2020 presidential election.
In Belarus, Andrei Gnyot is accused of tax evasion.
Gnyot himself denies this, believing that the regime of Alexander Lukashenko persecutes him for his political activities.
On March 12, the decision to extradite Andrei Gniet to Belarus was overturned by an appeals court in Serbia - allegedly, not all the circumstances on the basis of which the extradition decision was made were investigated.
At the same time, the court extended Andrei's detention for another 60 days.
New hearings in the case of Andrey Gniet are scheduled for March 26.
