What happened in
the annexed Crimea
during the last decade shows what life will be like for Ukrainians in the event of the so-called "freezing" of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine.
This was stated by
Celeste Wallander, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security,
during a speech at the OSCE Security Cooperation Forum.
"Today I would like to talk about a topic that sometimes arises in conversations about Russia's war against Ukraine, namely: what would happen if the front line was "frozen" now. The obvious answer is that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine would be violated, neither will respect for its internationally recognized borders be observed. Both the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act will be undermined
," she said.
She reminded that during this time the Russian Federation suppressed the realization of human and fundamental rights.
However, according to her, "only one aspect", and we should also look further - at what would happen behind the front line.
"We actually have information to understand what that picture would look like. It's been more than a decade since Russia illegally invaded Crimea and tried to annex it. And this decade of occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation has given us a lot of information about what life looks like Ukrainian citizens forced to live under the rule of the Kremlin. This is a grim reality,"
Wallander said.
Therefore, the colonial actions of Russia put the inhabitants of Crimea in front of a harsh choice: to be forced to obey the occupying power, to leave their home or not to obey.
"Those who chose to dissent faced repression, detention, torture and disappearances,"
said the US assistant secretary of defense.
Earlier we wrote about the fact that
there was a shooting in Novofedorivka
.
We are talking about the sounds of large-caliber weapons in the area of the airfield.
