(CNN) -- The suspect in an hours-long standoff in Pittsburgh after officers tried to evict him has died, according to police.

The occupant of a home who opened fire when sheriff's deputies tried to deliver an eviction notice died after an hours-long standoff, Pittsburgh authorities said Wednesday.

"The subject in this incident was pronounced dead by @PghEMS at 5:08 p.m. EST," public safety officials posted Wednesday afternoon on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Officials said they will hold a media briefing on the situation.

A deputy was injured Wednesday morning when a sheriff's office crew tried to deliver an eviction notice and was met with gunfire from someone in the home, Allegheny County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Manko said.

"One of our sergeants, who was leading the detachment, suffered a minor non-gunshot wound while avoiding the shooting. He's doing well," Manko said.

Following the shooting, police evacuated nearby residents and warned others to stay away from the area.

"Avoid the 4800 block of Broad Street and N. Mathilda Street in the Garfield neighborhood due to an active shooting situation," Pittsburgh Public Safety tweeted.

A neighbor who was at her home across the street from the scene of the shooting told CNN affiliate WPXI that she has bullet holes in her home.

Authorities banged on a door, he said, and "when they came in, I just heard him shooting. And then it was a deluge of bullets."

"I... I was trying to go down to the basement, but I was locked in my work office because the bullets were so close," she told WPXI by phone. "After that, I was just able to make it, crawl all the way to the basement."

She said it's unclear how long she will have to hide. "I'm just sheltering in this basement in a corner because every time I move, there's a hail of bullets that keep firing," he said.

More than an hour after the confrontation began, authorities said they were facing a barricade situation.

"Our number one goal is to make sure everybody evacuates this area ... especially those (who) may still be trapped inside homes like they were this morning," Pennsylvania State Trooper Rocco Gagliardi told CNN affiliate KDKA.

During his interview, the sound of apparent gunshots could be heard in the background.

"We are actively working with all emergency crews here at the scene to make sure we finish this as safely as possible," Gagliardi said.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect but confirmed it was a single individual, Manko said.

The FBI said it is assisting local authorities, but referred further comment to Pittsburgh police and the sheriff's office.
