A brown bear that injured five people in a Slovakian town was hunted down and shot a little more than a week after the incident, DPA reported.
Slovak Environment Minister Tomas Taraba wrote on Facebook today that the animal was shot last night.
Drones were also used in the search and identification of the bear, the Slovak news agency TASR reported, quoted by BTA.
A bear attacked people in the center of a town in Slovakia
The Brown Bear Encounter Response Team, which is part of the state conservation organization SOPSR, has set up a system of CCTV cameras to establish where the animal is.
Team patrols, police and hunters thoroughly searched the area around the town of Liptovsky Mikulas.
On March 17, the bear found itself in Liptovsky Mikulas and injured passers-by.
In videos, the frightened animal can be seen frantically running through the streets between cars, apparently looking for an escape route.
The bear pounces on adults and children who did not manage to get out of its way in time.
The victims, ranging in age from 10 to 72, were bitten and skinned, and one man nearly lost an eye.
The accident became an occasion to intensify previous calls by some of the local population and hunters to regulate the bear population by culling.
According to studies conducted by the SOPR together with Charles University, there are between 1,100 and 1,200 wild bears in Slovakia.
Usually, if spotted in time, bears avoid humans, but they may attack in surprise encounters or if a female thinks her cubs are in danger.
