History of the temple

The history of Jodhpur's historic Gangshyam Ji temple is many years old, where Jodhpur's ruler Rao Ganga Singh (1484-1531) had queen Padmavati, who was the daughter of Rao Jagmal of Sirohi.

She was a devotee of Krishna and on the advice of Queen Padmavati, Rao Ganga Singh, while returning from the marriage, asked for a dark-skinned idol of Lord Krishna as dowry.

This idol became famous by the name Gangshyam because it was brought by Rao Ganga Singh of Jodhpur.

Shakdweepiya priests also came along with this idol.

Before being installed in this temple, this idol was installed for some time in the Panch Deoria temple, the house of Shakdeepiya priest family in Jodhpur Fort, after which Maharaja Vijay Singh got this historical Gangshyam ji temple built.

Where the idol of Gangshyam ji was consecrated on Basant Panchami in 1818 AD, even today it is a center of great faith for the people associated with Sanatan Dharma.
