He became king on February 7, 1999 after the death of his father, King Hussein. Interestingly, when Abdullah II was three years old, his father decided that he would transfer power to his brother and not to his son.

And in January 1999, King Hussein suddenly announced Abdullah II as his heir. According to some sources, this decision was taken by him due to a conflict with his brother, in addition, the media mentioned that the king preferred Abdullah because "the army wanted it." Two weeks later, the head of state died. On the same day, Prince Abdullah was proclaimed the new king.

Today, together with his wife Queen Rania and children, they attended a special ceremony to raise the Silver Jubilee Flag to mark the 25th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne.
