The first generation of the model that was "created" Audi A4 was introduced in 1972.

The Audi 80 (B1) is the German manufacturer's first model to be sold in one million units.

It debuted exactly 50 years ago, in June 1972 on the eve of the Olympic Games in Munich, and a year later was declared the car of the year in Europe, Telegrafi reports.

With its launch, Audi entered the compact limousine segment.

The length of the car was 4.18 meters.

The design of the 80 model started in the 60s, and the goal was to be a modern and very safe car to drive.

Audi's then-technical chief, Ludvig Kraus, had asked for the car to be inserted wherever it could - but not to lose stability while driving.

When it started to be produced it weighed only 835 kilograms and had a 1.2 liter engine.

Most impressive was the generation that launched on the market in 1978, and was accessible with the quattro engine that makes all-wheel drive.

In the third generation from 1986, every barrier was broken where even today the Audi 80 is highly valued.

It was a stable and safe car and compared to other brands like Volvo.

This model used the procon-ten system, which protected passengers in the front seats in the event of an accident.

As an option there was also ABS in the quattro version.

Another innovation was seen in the fourth generation of the Audi 80, where it debuted with the 1.9 TDI engine.

This engine set a new trend, but also in the whole Volkswagen group.

The latest Audi 80 was characterized as a mid-range model, which among other things competed with the BMW Serie 3 or Mercedes 190.

The latest Audi 80 model was also the first to be offered in the caravan version (Avant).

Exactly 80 Avant was the foundation for the construction of the first model of the RS line, namely the Audi RS2 that was designed in collaboration with Porsche.

It is the first family sports car with performance that was then compared to the BMW M5 or Mercedes 500E.

The Audi 80 has also been a hit in both Europe and the US where it has been sold under the Fox logo.

It also became the first Audi model to be sold in one million units, and together with its successor, the Audi A4, has sold 12.5 million units to date (from model B1 to B9).
