The board 'stopped' retirement

Team India has been announced for the South Africa tour after the selectors' meeting held in Delhi on Thursday. On this tour, India has to play three T20 Internationals, three ODIs and two Test matches against the host country. While Suryakumar Yadav will lead the T20 team on this tour, KL Rahul has been given the same as the ODI team. At the same time, Rohit Sharma will be seen captaining in the Test series. The two-Test series that India will play on the tour of South Africa is part of the World Test Championship 2023-2025 cycle. While some new and young faces have been given a chance in the Indian team for the Test series against South Africa, some senior players have not got a place in the team, after which the picture becomes clear that the board has decided to retire these players in a way.

The BCCI and the team selectors have dropped senior players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Umesh Yadav from the South Africa tour. Both Rahane and Pujara are 35 years old and both are facing a drought of runs. In such a situation, the selectors have expressed confidence in the young batsmen. The pair of Pujara and Rahane have jointly played 188 Tests and both have scored 12,272 runs.

The situation was already clear about Cheteshwar Pujara not getting a place in the team. Cheteshwar Pujara has not been able to show any special feat with the bat for some time. Pujara ended his century drought in Bangladesh at the end of 2022. But since then he has been craving for runs. After this, he scored 10 runs in 211 innings, in which he was able to score more than 50 in one go.

On the other hand, after being ignored for the Test series against Australia and Bangladesh, Rahane performed well at the domestic level and made a place in Team India for the World Test Championship final and scored 89 runs in the final. Rahane seemed to be reviving his career, but on the Caribbean tour, his bat remained silent and he could score only 11 runs in two innings. After this, his career was also considered to be over. In the WTC final, Rahane was sent in as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. Now that Iyer has returned and is scoring runs in the white-ball series, Rahane was expected to go out.

"The two slots of Rahane and Pujara will now belong to Rahul and Iyer. Also, Gill will bat in the middle order and Yashasvi Jaiswal will get more chances." India already has no shortage of fast bowlers. In such a situation, Umesh's place was not being made anyway. But news agency PTI claimed in its report about the fast bowler that Umesh Yadav has also played his last Test.
