On December 11th, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will award the African Player of the Year award for the 2022-2023 season, more commonly known as the African Ballon d'Or, at a ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.

Mahrez spoke, in an interview with the French newspaper "L'Equipe", about his last season, which was great, about his chances of winning the Golden Ball for the best African player, amid competition by many stars who shone in Europe.

The former Manchester City star said: "For the African Ballon d'Or there are always Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane who are undoubtedly candidates for the coronation like every season, but collectively the season was difficult for them, I won three titles last season, and considering the international matches I scored 20 goals and assisted 15 goals."

"I've been one of the best performers in the Premier League, as well as in the FA Cup, less influential in the Champions League, and throughout the past seasons, I've always been influential in this special tournament."

The Algeria international added: "I have heard that there are those who are pushing for Yassine Bounou to receive the award for the best African player after winning the Europa League and shining in the World Cup with Morocco, but in any case nothing can be compared to the historic treble that I won with Manchester City. So we'll see."

Award nominees

  • Earlier this month, CAF revealed the candidates for the award, as the initial list included 30 players, including 14 Arab players, led by Mahrez and Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
  • There appear to be three leading candidates for the African Player of the Year award, which will take into account the performance of the 2022 nominees between November 2023 and September 30: Napoli international Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who finished eighth in France Football's Ballon d'Or, Yassine Bono, thirteenth in the same award ranking, and Mahrez, who was not among the <> nominees.
  • Osimhen was crowned with Napoli the Italian league title after topping the list of scorers in the competition, while Bono won the Europa League title with his former team Sevilla before his recent move to Saudi club Al Hilal, as well as his great contribution to Morocco's fourth place in the Qatar 2022 World Cup in an unprecedented Arab and African achievement.
  • As for Mahrez, he won with his former team Manchester City a historic treble last season by combining the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup.
