A few days ago, Messi attacked his former team Paris Saint-Germain, expressing his displeasure at the team's failure to "honor" him after winning the World Cup with his country, Argentina, in 2022.
Messi said: "I was the only Argentine player, among the 26-man squad in my country, who did not receive an honor from his club after winning the World Cup."
On Sunday, Al-Khelaifi responded to Messi's remarks, in a statement published through the French media, and said:
- There are a lot of gossip coming from abroad. But the truth is that everyone watched the video after Messi returned from World Cup.
- We congratulated Messi in training publicly, and that's what appeared in the video, as well as personally congratulated him behind the scenes, and the congratulations were respectfully and calmly because we are a French club.
- We didn't celebrate in the stadium in front of the fans, out of respect for the nationality of the club he plays for, a French club that represents France, and out of respect for his French teammates, who lost the final.
It is noteworthy that Messi led Argentina to defeat France in the final of the 2022 World Cup, last December.
