Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Zhan Beleniuk became the winner of the 2023 World Championships, which are taking place in Belgrade, Serbia.

The 32-year-old leader of the Ukrainian national Greco-Roman wrestling team won bronze in the weight category up to 87 kg.

Beleniuk began his performances at the 2023 World Cup with a confident victory over American Zachary Braunagel (5:1), but in the next fight he lost to the seed leader Ali Cengiz from Turkey (1:3).

Since Cengiz reached the final of the competition, Ukrainian got a chance to compete for a medal in consolation fights. There, Jean defeated Tony Metsomeki from Finland (5:1) and Zhalgasbay Berdymuratov from Uzbekistan (5:3).

And in the decisive match for the bronze medal, Beleniuk convincingly defeated Nursultan Tursynov from Kazakhstan (7:2).

This award was Jean's fifth in his career at the World Wrestling Championships. Previously, he won "gold" twice, as well as "bronze" and "silver" once.

In addition, Beleniuk won a license for the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris. It should be noted that at the 2020 Games in Tokyo he won gold, and in Rio 2016 he won silver.

This is the second Olympic license for Ukraine following the results of the World Cup in Belgrade. The first in women's wrestling was won by Iryna Kolyadenko, who won bronze in the weight category up to 62 kg.
