Portuguese specialist Fernando Santos has been dismissed from the post of head coach of the Polish national team.
This was announced by the Polish Football Association on its official website.
The reason for Santos' resignation was the team's unsatisfactory results in the selection for Euro-2024. After five matches played, the Poles are only fourth in the group with Albania (6 points), the Czech Republic (10), Moldova (8) and the Faroe Islands (8) with 1 points.
In the last match under the leadership of Santos, the Polish national team lost to Albania (0:2). This defeat was the third for "Kadra" in the current selection. Earlier, the Poles lost to the Czech Republic (1:3) and Moldova (2:3).
Santos took charge of the Polish national team in January 2023. Prior to that, he worked with the Portuguese team, which he led to victories at Euro 2016 and the 2018/19 Nations League.
The 68-year-old Portuguese specialist's contract with the Polish national team was valid until 2026. The name of the new head coach of "Kadra" will be announced later.
The Poles will play their next match in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on October 12 away against the Faroe Islands.
It will be recalled that the two best teams from each group will reach the final part of the 2024 European Championship. The winners of three more tickets to the continental championship will be determined in the playoffs, where 12 teams will get depending on their performances in the League of Nations-2022/23.
The draw for the final part of Euro-2024 will take place in December 2023, and the tournament itself will be hosted by Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. The German national team, as the host of the tournament, got to the continental championship without selection.
