Irfan Pathan on KL Rahul vs Ishan Kishan ODI WC 2023

Irfan Pathan on KL Rahul vs Ishan Kishan: With the announcement of Team India's World Cup squad, there is a constant reaction on team selection, while some former players have even made their own playing 11. In such a situation, now the question arises whether both KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan can be included in the same XI for the Indian team? Although some former cricketers believe that this can happen, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan (Irfan Pathan on Team India WC 2023 Playing 11) does not agree with this idea. For Irfan, Rahul and Ishaan can only join the XI together if no player in the top order is injured, so only one of them can come into the team as they are competing for the same spot.

While there are those who believe that Ishaan should be preferred over Rahul because of his form, Irfan cautioned the Indian team management against ignoring the number of Karnataka batsmen. "Both of them cannot get a place in the final XI. Both can only play if the top ba gets injured, which we don't want, or completely loses its form. There is only one thing I have to say about the ongoing debate," Pathan said in a conversation with Star Sports.

Ishan Kishan scored runs at No. 5 against Pakistan, which is not his position. God forbid if he gets out in the next match, will we say he is not in form? No it isn't. We should never forget KL Rahul's stats in the last two years and Ishan Kishan has played an innings," he added. Irfan believes that "long-term" thinking should be the way forward for the Indian team as 'short-term' ideas will create stability issues in the team.

"You don't have to have short-term memory. You have to have long-term thinking and I think the thinking with which the management is going is absolutely right because if you keep going with the short-term memory, you will have a lot of difficulty in building a team, stabilising it and giving confidence to people," Pathan said. Rahul should be preferred over Ishan for Pathan in the initial stages of the ODI World Cup. In a situation where Rahul fails to perform well, the left-handed batsman should take his place and stick with him for the rest of the campaign.

"You just have to keep in mind that if KL Rahul comes and plays and can't regain his form, you can say that he hasn't regained his form after injury and you can give Ishan Kishan the entire World Cup. However, as soon as KL Rahul comes, he will play," Pathan concluded.

Given the form Ishan has been in for some time now, it will be difficult for the Indian team to decide between him and Rahul.
