(CNN) -- The "Messimania" had a big showing in the New York area on Saturday after Lionel Messi made his Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season debut.

However, fans attending the match between Messi's Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls had to wait a little longer to see the Argentine superstar enter the match.

Messi was not in the starting XI, but came on as a substitute in the 60th minute as his club won 1-0.

Fans at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, gave the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner a standing ovation as he walked onto the field.

In the 89th minute, the crowd got just what they asked for. Messi scored his first official goal in MLS to extend the lead to 2-0 and secure victory for Inter Miami.

Ticket reseller VividSeats told CNN before the game that the average price for this weekend's game was $483. That's well above the usual $46 it costs to get a ticket to see the MLS team.

Even fans who weren't in the stadium to witness Messi's magic in person were able to get a taste of it. The game was broadcast on the giant screens of Times Square and the crowd that gathered to watch him applauded when he scored.

With the win, Inter Miami moved from last place in the Eastern Conference to 14th place, surpassing Toronto FC. Messi and Inter Miami are scheduled to play Nashville SC on Wednesday at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
