Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina won a ticket to the semifinals at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome.
In the quarterfinals, the 26-year-old native of Nova Kakhovka beat Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil in a tense three-set match.
The meeting lasted three hours and 50 minutes. The Ukrainian lost in the first set on a tiebreak – 6:7, but then took revenge in the second game, which she also won only on a tiebreak – 7:6. The decisive third set ended with the victory of our compatriot with a score of 6:3.
Kalinina is only the second tennis player in history Ukrainian to reach the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament. Before her, only Elina Svitolina succeeded.
For the right to play in the final, Kalinina will compete with Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who, due to the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, is allowed to compete in a neutral status. The game will take place on Friday, May 19.
On the way to the semifinals, Kalinina missed the first round of the competition in Rome, in the second round she crushed the Russian Anna Blinkova, in the third round she defeated the champion of the Australian Open 2020 and the former fourth racket of the world American Sofia Kenin, and in the 1/8 finals she won a strong-willed victory over the American Madison Keys.
We will remind, at the tournament in Rome performed four more Ukrainians. Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska were eliminated in the first round of the main draw, while Marta Kostyuk and Lesia Tsurenko were eliminated at the stage of the 1/16 final.
