Amancio Amaro, the legendary ex-football player

of Real Madrid,

 died at the age of 83.

The press service of the "Royal Club" announced the sad news. 

"Amancio will be remembered by all Real Madrid fans and football fans as one of the greatest players of this sport," Vershkovy said in a statement.

Amaro played for Real Madrid from 1962 to 1976.

In 14 seasons at the club, he played 471 matches and scored 155 goals.

Together with Madrid, Amancio won nine Spanish championship titles, three Spanish Cups, and in 1966 became the winner of the European Champions Cup.

As part of the Spanish national team, Amaro played 42 matches and scored 11 goals, winning the 1964 European Championship with the Red Fury.

After the end of his career, Amancio worked as a coach of the youth and main teams of Real Madrid.

Last year, Amaro was elected honorary president of the Madrid club.
