Myroslav Blažević

, the former head coach

of the Croatian national team , died at the age of 88.

The Croatian Football Federation announced the sad news on Twitter.

Blazhevych died of cancer.

Since 2011, he has been fighting cancer.

He was operated on in 2012, but the disease returned seven years later.

The famous coach nicknamed "Ciro" died in Zagreb after a long and exhausting battle with a serious illness.

Blazevic worked with the Croatian national team from 1994 to 2000.

Under his leadership, the "checkers" won the "bronze" of the 1998 World Championship.

In the selection for this tournament, the Croats beat the Ukrainian national team in head-to-head matches.

Myroslav also led the Croatian national team to the quarter-finals of Euro-1996.

His last place of work was the Croatian club Zadar.

He left the position of head coach of this team in 2015.
