(Central News Agency) Ukraine's Sports Minister Guzet said today that it is "unacceptable" that Russian and Belarusian athletes may be allowed to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, and threatened that Ukraine would boycott the Olympics if the two countries' athletes were allowed to participate.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it should "further explore" the inclusion of athletes from both countries despite Russia and its ally Belarus being banned from most Olympic sports following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last February, Agence France-Presse reported. "This situation is unacceptable for our country," Ukraine's sports minister Vadym Goutzeit said today.
Guzet said the Kyiv government was pressuring the IOC and other international organizations to gain support for banning Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Games.
"Our position remains the same - as long as the war in Ukraine continues there should be no Russians and Belarusians in international competitions," Guzette wrote on Facebook.
"If our voices are not heard, I do not rule out that our country may boycott and refuse to participate in the Olympics." 1120127
