The year 2022 is coming to an end.

Like the

previous one

, it turned out to be rich in great victories for our athletes, although it was overshadowed by the full-scale invasion of the Russian invaders on the territory of Ukraine.

Ukrainian athletes proudly represented their homeland on the international stage, while the Armed Forces continued to destroy the enemy at the front.

In honor of our athletes, the national anthem was played several times, and the blue-yellow flag - a symbol of freedom around the world - was raised.

TSN Prosport invites readers to recall the loudest victories of Ukrainian athletes based on the results of 2022.

Oleksandr Abramenko's Olympic "silver".

The 2022 Olympic Games

took place in Beijing from February 4 to 20

.

The XXIV Winter Olympics in history were the last major competitions before the full-scale war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

In the capital of the Celestial Empire, our country was represented by 45 athletes in 12 disciplines.

"Blue and Yellow" finished the Olympic Games with one medal - freestyler

Oleksandr Abramenko

won "silver"

in the individual ski acrobatics tournament.

As at the previous Winter Games, which took place in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Abramenko became the only medalist of the Ukrainian national team at the Olympics in Beijing - four years ago, the freestyler won gold.

Abramenko's "silver" allowed Ukraine to take 25th place in the overall

team medal count of the OI-2022

.

The winner of the medal count was the Norwegian national team, which won 37 awards.

Also, the Olympics in Beijing were remembered for the

silent protest

of the Ukrainian skeletonist Vladyslav Geraskevych, who called to prevent the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

After his speech in the qualification, he showed a poster with the inscription "No war in Ukraine" in front of the cameras.

However, in less than two weeks, the Russian army launched a large-scale invasion of Ukrainian lands.

Historical record of Ukraine at the Paralympics

Despite the full-scale war that Russia started against Ukraine, in March our Paralympic team went to Beijing, where they impressed absolutely everyone with their performances.

"Blue and Yellow" finished the 2022 Paralympics with 29 medals: 11 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze.

The Ukrainian team finished in second place in the final medal tally, ahead of only China - 61 awards (18-20-23).

At the 2022 Games, Ukrainian Paralympians broke

two historical records

at once : for the number of awards won at one Paralympics, as well as for the gold medals won.

Due to the war in Ukraine, Paralympians from the aggressor countries were not allowed to participate in the 2022 Paralympics even under a neutral flag.

This marked the beginning of the isolation of Russian and Belarusian sports from the civilized world.

Successes of Ukrainian track and field athletes

In 2022, Ukraine had many victories in athletics as well.

High jumper Yaroslav Maguchich

won the historic "gold" of the European Multisport Championship

(Munich), "gold" of the World Indoor Championship (Belgrade), "silver" of the world championship in Eugene, and also

won the final of the Diamond League

, having previously won a number of stages of the largest commercial athletics tournament.

It is the 21-year-old athlete from Dnipro who holds the season's world record in the high jump - 2.05 m. As a result of an extremely successful season, Maguchih was

nominated

for the title of the best track and field athlete in the world in 2022.

In addition to Maguchych, our other track and field athletes also performed excellently.

And within a month, he won bronze at the European Multisport Championship in Munich, Germany.

This result was the best in the history of performances of our volleyball team at the world championships.

For the first time, Ukrainians played at the World Championship back in 1998 and took 10th place there.

Oleksandr Usyk defended his heavyweight championship belts

On the night of August 21, 2022, Oleksandr Usyk

defeated the

British Anthony Joshua in a rematch, which took place in the city of Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Thus, the Ukrainian defended the WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF titles, which he

took

from AJ last fall, and also won the vacant

.

The tense match lasted all 12 rounds.

In the eighth and ninth rounds, Joshua carried out several powerful attacks on the opponent's body, but the Ukrainian resisted, and in the final rounds he finally turned the fight in his favor.

In the end, the judges awarded Usyk the victory by split decision: 113−115, 115−113, 116−112.

Next year, Oleksandr plans to fight with the WBC belt holder, the British Tyson Fury, to become the absolute world champion in super heavy weight.

In addition, Ukrainian lightweight boxers Vasyl Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk successfully returned to the ring in 2022.

Both, as well as Usyk, after the start of a full-scale war entered territorial defense to protect their native country from Russian invaders.

In the autumn, Lomachenko left Teroboron and flew to the USA, where on the night of October 30 at the Madison Square Garden arena in New York,

he won a

unanimous decision of the judges  over the American Jemaine Ortiz.

Berinchyk returned to the ring at the beginning of December at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in London.

In the undercard of the match between Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora, the Ukrainian

defeated

the Frenchman Ivan Mendy by unanimous decision of the judges and won the title of European champion according to the EBU version.

It is worth noting that these are far from all the achievements of Ukrainian athletes in such a difficult year for our people as 2022.

We hope that next year will be even more successful for Ukrainian sports.

But we continue to work every day for the main victory in the life of every Ukrainian.

Actively support and help the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to expel the enemy from the entire territory of our homeland together.
