Indonesia football match stampede

New Delhi:

More than 150 people have been killed in a stampede after a professional football match in Malang, Indonesia, on Saturday night.

According to local officials, after the home team's defeat, a large number of fans started entering the ground, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells, which created an atmosphere of chaos and many people were crushed.

After Arema Football Club's 3-2 loss to Persebaya Surabaya, dozens of fans tried to descend on Arema's home ground Kanjuruhan Stadium.

As the unrest spread, the police were forced to fire tear gas shells, which spread panic.

Niko Afinta, the Inspector General of the East Java Police Chief, told a news conference.

As confusion spread over the death toll, the government-backed National Human Rights Commission said that 153 people had died, while the Arema Football Club put the number at 182.

Both figures make Saturday's match one of the deadliest episodes and tragic events in the history of football.

Earlier in 1964, at least 300 people were killed when riots broke out at the country's national stadium following an unpopular decision by a referee at a football match in Peru.

In a televised speech to the nation, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he has asked the national police chief to conduct a thorough investigation into what happened.

He said he has also ordered the Minister of Youth and Sports, the National Police Chief and the President of the Football Association of Indonesia to evaluate safety in football matches.
