Neeraj Chopra

New Delhi:

Fitted Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra can create another history when he enters the Lausanne Diamond League competition on Friday.

The 24-year-old javelin thrower has recovered from a minor 'groin strain' injury.

He suffered this injury last month while winning the historic silver medal at the World Championship in Eugene, USA.

A top three finish will ensure Chopra's place in the Diamond League Finals to be held in Zurich on September 7 and 8 as he is fourth on the table with seven points.

He finished second in the Stockholm Diamond League on 30 June, his first podium place in it.

A finish in the top six in the table will advance them to the Zurich Finals.

The Lausanne Diamond League is the final stage of the men's javelin throw event.

It remains to be seen whether Chopra continues his stellar run this season after a month of 'rehab'.

He may become the first Indian to win the Diamond League event as the eight male javelin throwers participating in it are not strong enough.

Before Chopra, discus thrower Vikas Gowda is the only Indian to finish in the top three in the Diamond League event.

Gowda had finished second twice in 2012 New York and 2014 Doha, in addition to third twice (in 2015 in Shanghai and Eugene).

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Wadlech is participating in Lausanne and the Czech Republic athlete tops the table with 20 points.

He is followed by Germany's Julian Weber (19 points) and Grenada's world champion Andersen Peters (16 points).

Webber will not take part in Lausanne and Peters is also recovering from injury.

Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago is also in the running.

The three athletes who are below Chopra in the Diamond League table are Gatiss Cox and Patrick Gbelmes of Latvia and Curtis Thompson of America.

Chopra's season best of 89.94m, Wadlech's season best of 90.88m and Walcott's 89.07m.

Chopra had decided to pull out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games two days before the start of the Games as he was advised four weeks' rest.

Chopra had tweeted on Monday, "Feeling good and ready for Friday.

Thanks everyone for the support.

See you in Lausanne."

See you in Lausanne!
