The Indian women's hockey team clinched the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games by defeating defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in a shoot-out in Birmingham on Sunday.

This is the first medal of the Indian women's hockey team in the Commonwealth Games in 16 years.

This is the biggest success of Team India under the captaincy of Savita Punia.

After conceding a goal in the last 30 seconds, and then missing out the first penalty shot, India came out winners against New Zealand!

The Indian team was leading 1-0 in the final moments of the match but in less than the last 30 seconds, they gave a penalty corner to the opposing team.

This converted into a penalty stroke and Olivia Meri equalized New Zealand, after which the match was drawn into a shoot-out.

In regular time, India took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to a goal from Salima Tete.


In the shoot-out against New Zealand, Indian captain and goalkeeper Savita thwarted three attempts to ensure India's third Commonwealth medal.
