Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad said from the Iranian embassy in Damascus: “We strongly condemn this heinous terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and led to the martyrdom of a number of innocent people.”

He added: "Israel will not be able to influence the relations between Iran and Syria." 

For his part, Iranian Ambassador to Damascus, Hussein Akbari, said: “The Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate reflects the reality of the Zionist entity, which does not recognize any international laws and does everything inhumane to achieve what it wants,” stressing that “Tehran’s response to targeting the consulate will be harsh.” .

The Syrian Arab News Agency quoted a military source as saying: “At approximately 00:17 pm today, the Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus.”

He continued: "Our air defense forces responded to the aggression's missiles and shot down some of them. The aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the killing and wounding of everyone inside. Work is underway to recover the bodies of the dead, treat the wounded, and remove the rubble."

For his part, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, reported that there had been an "Israeli attack" targeting a building attached to the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Media reports indicate that the incident resulted in the death of the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, Mohammad Reza Zahedi.
