On Friday, March 1, German Eurofighter fighters took off from the Lielvarde military base in

Latvia

to intercept Russian aircraft near the country's territorial waters.  

The Air Force of Latvia announced this on Facebook.

"This is the first time that German Eurofighter fighters from Lielvarde went on such a mission," the Latvian Air Force said in a statement.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds commented on the event and emphasized that NATO's airspace patrol is fully functional and Alliance members are able to respond immediately.
