What is vernal equinox from a scientific point of view

This is the astronomical moment when the length of the day and the length of the night become equal.

There are two equinoxes every year - the spring equinox (between March 19 and 21) when we enter summer time in the northern hemisphere, and the autumn equinox (between September 21 and 24) when we enter the autumn-winter period.

From a practical point of view, the vernal equinox coincides with the first day of spring in the Gregorian calendar.

The vernal equinox rarely falls on March 21.

The last time it happened was in 2007 and it will happen again in 2102.

Note that a few days after the vernal equinox, Ukrainians will also

switch to summer time

Our ancestors noticed that on this day the weather becomes nicer.

The holiday was very important for Ukrainians, and that is why they celebrated it on a special scale.

In the morning, housewives baked lark-shaped cookies and decorated them with sugar syrup.

The first treats in pagan times were given to the Bear God.

This was done to appease the deity.

It was believed that then predators would not attack men during hunting.

After dinner, everyone went to the fair.

There they sang, danced, and had fun playing games.

The most popular were tug-of-war, jumping over towns or bonfires.

There was a belief that nature itself would protect the winners from dark forces.

In the evening, bonfires were lit in the town or village square.

It was believed that a high and bright flame is a guarantee of a full and happy year.

Our ancestors ended the day of the spring equinox by rolling flaming wheels, which were a symbol of the Sun, from the mountain into the river.

How other peoples of the world celebrate the vernal equinox

Our ancestors considered the day of the vernal equinox to be magical, and therefore, after sunset, young girls began to divine love and fate.

There was a tradition of baking gingerbread, adding various items to the raw dough (a ring - a wedding, a necklace - pregnancy, earrings - a meeting with the chosen one, etc.).

With which object the girl pulled out the finished gingerbread, what was waiting for her in the future.

Candle divination was also popular.

The girl sat down in a chair, relaxed and lit a candle.

Looking at the flame, she tried to imagine the life she dreams of.

It was believed that on this particular day fate would surely hear you.

And in order to find out the name of the future husband, the girls wrote different names on pieces of paper and put them under the pillow.

In the morning, without saying a word, they pulled out one sheet.

What name was drawn - that will be the name of the convicted person.

Folk signs

Our ancestors noticed that if there is frost on March 20, then the whole spring will be cold.

And if it is warm, then the next 40 days will be the same weather.

If you see a flock of birds flying high in the sky, then the grain harvest will be rich.

It was very important to forgive all insults, drive away negativity from thoughts, then nature will be kind throughout the year.
