(CNN Spanish) --

The Attorney General's Office of Michoacán investigates the murder of two candidates for mayor of Maravatío, a city in the northwest of the state.

The prosecution identified the candidates, found dead hours apart, as Armando Pérez Luna, of the National Action Party (PAN), and Miguel Ángel Reyes Zavala, of the ruling party, Morena, it was explained in two press releases.

The Prosecutor's Office first reported this Monday that it opened a homicide investigation after Reyes Zavala was found in the afternoon with gunshot wounds, when he was parked in his car near the hospital where he worked.

In another statement, issued this Tuesday, the institution indicated that Pérez Luna was found in his car also on Monday around 10:30 at night (local time), also with gunshot wounds.

Until this Tuesday, there had been no information about a possible motive for the attacks against the candidates or about arrests.

CNN contacted the Prosecutor's Office this Tuesday for more information, but the agency's Communication Department explained that this is an ongoing investigation and that they cannot provide more details.

The Morena State Committee in Michoacán expressed its condolences in a Facebook post on Monday and condemned the murder of its partner.

"We demand from the state Attorney General's Office a prompt and exhaustive investigation to bring those responsible for this crime to justice," the letter adds.

The State Steering Committee of the National Action Party (PAN) regretted the murders of both candidates.

"Enough of the murders in Michoacán and the country!" he added in a statement.
