"Production unit No. 3 at the Chinon nuclear power plant has shut down automatically in accordance with the reactor's safety and protection systems," EDF said in a statement, adding that it had also shut down Reactor No. 4, which is connected to No. 3.

In turn, the French Nuclear Safety Service stated that the fire caused a power outage at the station, which is why the reactors stopped automatically.

It is also reported that the fire was extinguished.
