Authorities confirm 14 dead in armed confrontation in the State of Mexico 2:37

(CNN Español) -- The Ministry of Security and the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico reported that 14 people died on Friday in an armed confrontation in the municipality of Texcaltitlán, in the center of the country.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement that 11 of the dead were people allegedly involved in criminal activities and that the other three were residents of Texcaltitlán, a municipality located 65 kilometers from Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico.

According to the secretariat, the events are being investigated by the State Police, the National Guard and ministerial agents.

The State of Mexico is the most populous entity in Mexico, with about 17 million inhabitants, and has 125 municipalities. According to official figures, it is also one of the states with the highest levels of violence, a problem that authorities attribute to the activity of criminal groups.

According to the most recent report from the federal government, the State of Mexico was the second state with the most intentional homicides in the period from January to October of this year. In those 10 months it had 2,222 cases, only below the 2,668 registered in Guanajuato.
