Amid protests over the appointment of Akbaruddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen as the pro-tem speaker of the Assembly, Telangana minister and Congress leader Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday said that "it is a normal process and added that the Congress party did what was right to do"
"Based on seniority in the Assembly, I should have been the pro-tem speaker, who is the senior-most MLA of the Congress party, but since I have been sworn in as a minister, the process did not allow me to become the pro-tem speaker. So then we looked at the other 6-term MLAs, the senior-most MLAs. Among all the parties, Akbaruddin Owaisi is the senior-most MLA. So it's a normal process," he said.

Further, Reddy defended the appointment of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA as the pro-tem speaker, saying it was a normal procedure followed even during the previous BRS government. He insisted that the decision was taken on the basis of what was right, not due to some external factors.
Telangana minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said that last time when there was a BRS government, they had AIMIM MLAs as the pro-tem speaker. It has nothing to do with anything else. We did what was right to do. I cannot comment on the future equation with AIMIM.
