President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, together with representatives of the Jewish clergy of Ukraine, took part in the ceremony of lighting Hanukkah candles on the occasion of the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

"This holiday is about the victory of fortitude. And this is the most important thing. I wish all of you, us and all those who are always on the side of light, on the side of Ukraine and the people, on the side of life, Hanukkah and victory," Zelenskyy said.

The ceremony was attended by: Chairman of the Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine Meyer Stambler, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine Rabbi Rafael Rutman, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Religious Community of the Central Synagogue of Kyiv Moshe Azman, Chief Rabbi of Lviv Mordechai Bold, Chief Rabbi of Uzhhorod Menachem Mendel Wilhelm, Chief Rabbi of Zhytomyr Shlomo Wilhelm, Chief Rabbi of Odessa Avraham Wolf, Chief Rabbi of Kryvyi Rih Liron Ederi, Chief Rabbi of Dnipro Shmuel Kaminetsky, Chief Rabbi of Kharkiv Moshe Moskovich, Chief Rabbi of Sumy Yechiel Levitansky, Chief Rabbi of the Beit Menachem Chabad Synagogue (Kyiv) Yonatan Markovich.

Background: Russian dictator Putin called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "a disgrace to the Jewish people."

For his part, the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Moshe Reuven Azman, replied that he was proud of President Zelensky.

The Jewish Confederation responded to Putin's scandalous statement. They emphasized that "Zelensky is a leader who has shown an example of courage"
