A specialized police operation of the General Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime (GDBOP) to detect and document the activities of an organized criminal group related to illegal logging has been conducted on the territory of Pernik, the press center of the ministry announced. The police actions were carried out under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office in the city.

Five people were detained in the course of the operation – aged 43, 45, 60, 29 and 33. Work on the case began in early 2023, after receiving information about illegal mining in the Pernik region.

The investigation revealed that officials were also involved in the criminal activity.

The detainees were arrested as defendants under Article 321, paragraph 3 of the Penal Code, Article 235 and Article 282 of the Penal Code. Various restrictive measures have been imposed on them - for a period of up to 72 hours, a "cash guarantee" in the amount of BGN 7000,<> and a "subscription".
