A 24-year-old Dalit man died after he was allegedly beaten up with sticks by a group of men for drinking water from a public tap in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun, police said on Sunday. The police gave this information on Tuesday. Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kishore Srivastava said that in the complaint given to the Ushat police station, the father of the deceased, Jagdish, has alleged that his son Kamlesh (24) was beaten up with a stick by Suraj Rathod and his associates on Monday night for drinking water from the tap.

Kamlesh was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment on Tuesday, he said quoting from the complaint. Additional Superintendent of Police said that Suraj Rathod, named in the incident, has been arrested. Srivastava said Kamlesh's body has been sent for post-mortem and a detailed probe has been ordered into the matter and it will be probed by the Ujhani circle officer.
