Using police commissioner Vikas Arora's picture as a display picture on WhatsApp, the fraudster sent messages to deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of police asking them to buy gift coupons worth Rs 50,000 and share the code with them, officials said on Tuesday.
However, since the police chief's number was saved in the officers' phones, they got suspicious and alerted each other, said an officer, adding that the messages were sent on the evening of November 23 and 24. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons at cyber crime police station East, police said. An official from the cyber cell said the man took a photograph of the police commissioner along with the numbers of senior officers from the Gurugram police website.
