Indore:

Indore: The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday sought a response from the state government and the trust involved in the beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple accident in Indore. A bench of Justices Vivek Rusia and Anil Verma also ordered a police inquiry into the incident, a magisterial inquiry and a report on the present status of the charge sheet.

At least 36 people were killed when the floor of beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple collapsed on a bawdi in Indore. On Tuesday, the High Court has sought a response from the government while hearing the public interest petition filed regarding this. The bench passed the order after hearing the arguments of the parties concerned on a PIL filed by former city councillor Mahesh Garg. The petition has sought fixing of responsibility of all the culprits in the temple accident and issuance of guidelines to prevent recurrence of such accidents.

Demand for CBI probe

The petition has also sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident. The CBI has been included as a respondent in the petition. The bench, however, said during the hearing on the plea that it finds no ground to issue notice to the CBI at the present stage.

During the arguments on the petition, the petitioner's counsel Manish Yadav drew the couple's attention to the alleged lax and slow investigation into the accident. At the same time, the state government said that compensation has been provided to the families of those killed in the accident. The court expressed displeasure over this and asked why this compensation should be paid from the government treasury and whether the compensation amount has been recovered from the trust associated with the temple. The next date of hearing on the petition is January 15, 2024.

At least 36 people were killed when the floor of the temple collapsed.

On March 30, 21 people, including 36 women and two children, were killed when the floor of the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple collapsed during ram navami havan-puja, officials said. Following the accident, an FIR was lodged against Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple Trust president Sevaram Galani and secretary Murli Kumar Sabnani under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), he said.

On April 3, four days after the tragedy, the administration had shifted the idols of gods and goddesses installed at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple to another shrine and demolished the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple, citing safety of the general public. Along with this, the bawdi, which witnessed the horrific accident, was closed forever by putting debris.
