Uttarkashi: Efforts are on to rescue 12 labourers trapped in the under-construction Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand since November 41. There is to be a vertical drilling of 86 meters to reach the laborers. So far, 36 meters have been excavated. Meanwhile, rat miners have also started manual drilling from Monday. Rat miners are workers who go inside the thin passage and drill. These rat miners will drill by entering the 800mm pipe. On the other hand, according to officials, the change in weather can cause problems in rescue.

  • Rescue pipes were being dug through the American Auger machine from the Silkyara end to reach the trapped laborers in the tunnel. On November 24, just 12 meters before the workers' location, the blades of the machine were broken. Because of this, the rescue had to be stopped. Today the head of the machine was removed.

  • Uttarakhand Government Secretary Dr. Neeraj Khairwal said that the work of cutting the blade and soft of the Auger machine stuck in the pipe has been completed. The head of the Auger machine has also been removed. The first 1.9 meter pipe was cut. The pipe has also been pushed 0.9 meters ahead while working manually.

  • The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and hailstorm in Uttarakhand during the next 24 hours. Scientists say that changes in weather can cause problems in rescue operations.

  • Additional Secretary Road Transport and Highways Ministry Mehmood Ahmed said that the work of vertical drilling is also going on at a rapid pace. So far, 36 meters of vertical drilling has been done.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Special Secretary PK Mishra, Home Secretary Ajay K Bhalla and Uttarakhand Chief Secretary SS Sandhu also reached the tunnel to take stock of the rescue operation.

  • A team of 24 doctors, including 2 psychiatrists, has been deployed at the site 5 hours a day, who are talking to the stranded laborers in two shifts. From 9 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 8 pm, the workers are sharing their state of mind with the doctors. A mic has been sent through pipes to the workers to talk.

  • Family members of the labourers trapped in the tunnel have been allowed to talk to them whenever they want. The administration has set up a camp outside the tunnel for the families of the laborers.

  • Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority, said the psychological health of those trapped in the tunnel was also being taken care of and the family was being made to speak to them. At the same time, havan is being done by the local people near the tunnel. Union Minister General VK Singh has also arrived to attend the havan.

  • Nodal officer Neeraj Khairwal said that there was a leakage of water near the tunnel. However, water is not a big threat, the water that came during vertical drilling has been removed. There are no aquifers below.

  • The Silkyara tunnel accident took place at 12 am on November 4. Soil fell up to 200 meters inside 60 meters of the tunnel's entry point. In this, 41 laborers were trapped inside. The labourers trapped inside the tunnel are from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
