The vice president of Russia's largest state-owned bank, Sberbank, Nikolai Vasev, died suddenly. This was reported by the bank in a press release, according to which the 42-year-old banker died today of a heart attack, DPA reported.
Before his death, Vasev was responsible for private clients and ownership of Sberbank for the past 12 years, and since December 2022 he has been appointed vice president.
The European Union imposed tough sanctions on Sberbank in the summer of 2022 in response to Russia's war against Ukraine. Under pressure from Western sanctions, Russian banks said their profits plunged more than 90 percent last year.
Several Russian politicians, business leaders and leading financiers have died of alleged heart attacks or suicides since the start of the war in Ukraine.
