(CNN Español) –– Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday nominated his Justice Minister, Flávio Dino, for a vacant position on the Federal Supreme Court, and Paulo Gonet as Attorney General of the Republic, according to a review published on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Dino was a federal deputy between 2007 and 2011, governor of Maranhão for two terms, and held the presidency of the Interstate Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon in 2021.

"President Lula honors me immensely with his appointment as Minister of the STF. I would like to thank you again for this proof of professional recognition and confidence in my dedication to our nation," Dino said on his X account.

When one of the seats on the Supreme Court becomes vacant, the president proposes someone to fill it, the person must be a Brazilian citizen by birth, over 35 years of age and under 70 years of age, with remarkable legal knowledge and an impeccable reputation.

In addition to the nomination, the nominee must go through a hearing in the Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee, and then receive approval from an absolute majority of the full House to take office.
