All institutions work in unison and with full mobilization to prevent and eliminate accidents and protect people across the country. The ministries and their agencies and companies have been ready since Friday. From midnight work is being done at full speed and in cooperation with the local authorities to restore normal rhythm in the settlements. Snow continues to fall in the districts of Ruse, Razgrad, Shumen, Dobrich, Sliven, Gabrovo, Silistra, Stara Zagora, the government press service announced.
So far, more than 120 people have been evacuated, and at this point work continues on several signals for people in distress in the districts of Sofia, Vratsa, Plovdiv and Varna.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Acad. Nikolay Denkov convened an extraordinary meeting in the Council of Ministers.
Denkov: In over 1000 settlements there is no electricity, over 100 people have been released from snow traps
During the last 1110 hours, <> snow plows and machines have been clearing and processing the roads of the national road network. The teams of the Road Infrastructure Agency and the General Directorate "Fire Safety and Protection of the Population" work without interruption to locate and eliminate failures and accidents.
By order of the Prime Minister Acad. Denkov and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Kiril Vatev have established an organization for the six State Forest Enterprises to actively support with forest equipment the cleaning of snow and the removal of damage. In the districts of Vratsa and Veliko Tarnovo, at the request of the municipal and regional authorities, military formations have also been involved in the cleaning.
Currently, the Troyan-Karnare pass is closed to traffic for all vehicles. All others are now open. The highways are cleaned and open for traffic, and where necessary, the traffic is regulated by the Traffic Police. Traffic for all vehicles has been temporarily suspended due to snowfall, snow removal and many fallen trees on the territory of Razgrad Municipal Administration, where a state of emergency has been declared. By order of the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeykov from Friday in the National Railway Infrastructure Company an organization was established for action in complicated winter conditions. All teams and equipment have been mobilized to promptly eliminate accidents caused mainly by fallen trees and power lines as a result of heavy snowfall and strong winds. So far, nearly 40 major accidents have been resolved. The movement of trains in only ten sections has been interrupted and work is underway to restore it. Water supply in some regions has been suspended due to power outages. The teams of water and sewerage operators work to restore the service as soon as possible after the restoration of the power supply and with a commitment to inform local communities in a timely manner.
Students from over 280 schools in thirteen districts of the country will not study on Monday because of the complicated situation – lack of electricity, interrupted internet, broken cables, impassable roads, etc. The decisions for this were taken today by regional crisis headquarters, regional governors and mayors of municipalities. In the district of Dobrich is the most critical situation – they will not study in 67 schools from 8 municipalities. There are still municipalities where meetings of crisis headquarters continue and there may be changes for which there will be up-to-date information on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science.
The Social Assistance Agency at the MLSP receives and processes signals for homeless citizens. The teams support mayors who have expressed a need to bring homeless shelters to the right condition for the disaster. Walks are made together with the Ministry of Interior in all areas, the homeless are invited to take shelter, the efforts with the Bulgarian Red Cross and the Social Security Fund are coordinated to provide hot food and blankets and everything necessary. Work is also being done with municipal hospitals in large cities to set aside premises for the homeless, overtaken by winter. Citizens are requested to report homeless people in distress on 112, the Council of Ministers said.
