(CNN Español) -- The Guatemalan government said Friday it is searching for 10 Guatemalan merchants who allegedly disappeared on the country's border with the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Guatemala's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it has already issued an international alert and is in contact with the families of the merchants who have already provided information about their identity documents.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the consulate in Comitán, Chiapas, is working with Mexican authorities in the search efforts.

CNN reached out to Mexico's Foreign Ministry and National Institute of Migration for more information on the case, but did not immediately receive a response.

The Guatemalan Foreign Ministry said it has not yet been able to pinpoint the location of the alleged disappearance because the merchants had a chicken sales route that covered several municipalities in Chiapas. This route included Frontera Comalapa, Amatenango de la Frontera, Siltepec, Chicomuselo, El Porvenir and Motozintla.
