Clouds of smoke and ash covered the skies over Papua New Guinea after a volcano erupted on the northeastern island of New Britain.

Filmed during a flight to Lihir Island, eyewitness videos and photos show a large cloud of volcanic ash over the Ulavun volcano and surrounding areas.

Ulavun erupted around 15:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, spewing volcanic smoke at altitudes of up to 15,000 meters.

Some residents of the remote island are on alert and are preparing to evacuate.
