A Turkish cargo ship with 12 crew sank off the Turkish Black Sea coast in a storm on Monday, authorities were unable to contact the crew, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Tuesday.

The captain of the Turkish-flagged Kafkametler said on Monday morning that the ship was heading for a breakwater near Eregli, in Turkey's northwestern county of Zonguldak, the county governor's office said earlier.

Yerlikaya said the ship sank after hitting the breakwater, BTA reported.

Yesterday the area was hit by severe storms. The county manager's office said bad weather had prevented air vehicles and vessels from conducting a search.

Yerlikaya told reporters that search and rescue operations would begin as soon as weather conditions improve.
