History wanted that, 50 years later, the threat of rain would again be present on the road trip from Quang Binh province to Quang Tri. But, if five decades ago, nothing could prevent the Commander in Chief from reaching the liberated territories of South Vietnam, today the intense rain did not hinder this purpose of reaching the southern zone to the Cuban delegation, headed by Esteban Lazo.
The President of the State Council and his entourage arrived at the emblematic bridge over the Ben Hai River, which marks the 17th Parallel, which formerly divided the north and south of the country, accompanied by Tran Thanh Man, permanent vice president of the National Assembly of Vietnam, and authorities from Quang Tri. Crossing the bridge from north to south, as Fidel did; Lazo Hernández affirmed that the photo of the greeting to the deputy head of the Vietnamese Parliament reflected, from this historic place, the eternal brotherhood between Cuba and Vietnam.
In the visitors' book, he expressed the deep emotion of visiting this scene of such heroic combats, where 50 years ago the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution expressed the firmest solidarity of the Cuban people.
"At either end of this bridge the flags of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam waved victoriously. Nothing and no one was able to divide the people of Ho Chi Minh, one from north to south. We are moved by the stories we have heard, the images we have seen and the extraordinary contribution they made to humanity," he said in his message.
