One of the wedding guests told the private Iraqi channel Al-Oula that "the bride and groom are fine, I was with them, but their condition is devastated because of what happened to the people here."
Death toll from 'tragic wedding' fire
- More than 100 people were killed and 150 injured in a fire at a wedding hall in the Hamdaniya district of Iraq's Nineveh province, as the Civil Defense searched for survivors amid the charred wreckage of the building until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
- Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaf said 113 people had been confirmed killed, and state media put the death toll at least 100, with 150 wounded.
- "Preliminary information indicates that fireworks were used during the wedding, which led to the initial setting fire inside the hall and spread the fire very quickly and exacerbated the matter," the Iraqi Civil Defense said.
- He added: "The wedding hall is covered with highly flammable Ecobond panels, which violate safety instructions and are referred to the judiciary according to the Civil Defense Law. for its lack of safety requirements from wet warning and extinguishing systems."
