In Russia, the FSB is checking high-ranking officials of the Russian Guard for involvement in the rebellion of the leader of the private military company Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is about this.
The reason for the inspections was that the Russian Guard allegedly allowed Wagner to hide shells and equipment in its warehouses immediately after the suppression of the rebellion.
"An unidentified general named Roman supervised the storage of up to four large containers of Wagner military equipment near the Rosgvardia training ground in the Cossack Camp area," the statement said.
In particular, the Kremlin wants to consolidate Russia's internal security apparatus around the Russian Guard after the Wagner rebellion.
"The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on June 27 preparations for the transfer of Wagner heavy military equipment to unspecified units of Russian troops on the same day that the head of the Russian Guard, Viktor Zolotov, announced that the Russian Guard would receive heavy weapons and tanks," the analysts said.
A little later, in July, the Russian government also officially transferred the special unit "Grom" of the Federal Drug Control Service (MIA of Russia) under the control of the Russian Guard.
After returning from the war in Ukraine, mercenaries of the Wagner PMC are refused to be hired by law enforcement agencies, military-industrial complex enterprises, and even restaurants. Therefore, the militants get a job as taxi drivers and construction workers.
What is known about "Rosgvardia"
The Russian Guard is recruiting previously imprisoned former fighters from the Wagner Group to subdue Russian mercenaries and at the same time strengthen Russia's internal security.
The Rosgvardia, which is considered an internal army, was created for protests. It is better armed than the occupiers fighting in Ukraine.
On 4 August, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that will allow Rosgvardia to be equipped with heavy weapons. The dictator's decision may indicate that he views this structure as one of the main pillars of the regime's security.
