Five accused arrested within 24 hours

Raipur: Five persons have been arrested and jewellery looted from a private bank in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district within 62 hours in connection with the robbery of Rs 24.62 crore cash and gold, police said on Sunday. Police officials gave this information on Wednesday. Rakesh Kumar Gupta (22), Upendra Singh (50), Nishant alias Pankaj Kumar Mahato (32), all residents of Bihar's Gaya district, were arrested in connection with the robbery of cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 22.24 crore from an Axis Bank branch near Dhimrapur Chowk in the city on Tuesday, police officials said. Rahul Kumar Singh (<>) and Amarjeet Kumar (<>) have been arrested.

The accused were arrested from Balrampur district and adjoining areas, he said. Police officials said that on Tuesday morning, the police started investigating as soon as they received information about a robbery by armed accused in Axis Bank. During the investigation, a blockade was imposed in the district and information was also shared with the border districts. During investigation, the police also scanned footage of CCTV cameras installed around the bank, he said.

Police officials said that on the basis of footage received from the accused and ground reports, possible escape routes were identified and senior officials from Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha were contacted. During this, the police got information that the accused belonged to the Sherghati gang of Gaya district. The gang was also involved in the Canara Bank robbery case that took place in Korba district.

How did the police arrest him?
After identifying the accused, information was received that the suspected car was in Ramanujganj area of the state and the local police were contacted to stop the car and two persons were detained, he said. During interrogation, it was found that the other accused were coming in a truck from behind, police officials said. When the police tried to stop the truck, the two accused in it fled from the spot. The police have arrested the truck driver. Later, the police arrested the two accused from a bus in Palamu area of Jharkhand.

The police interrogated the five detained accused and recovered a country-made rifle, a dagger, eight cartridges and looted money and jewellery stuffed in sacks inside the truck,
he said. The car and the truck have been seized by the police. Police teams are conducting raids to nab other accused involved in the crime, police officials said. Amarjeet Kumar and Rajesh Das, accused of Sherghati dacoit gang in Gaya district of Bihar, are involved in cases of kidnapping, theft, robbery etc. in many districts of Bihar.
