The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived in New York to participate in the high-level segment of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

On behalf of the Group of 77 and China – of which Cuba holds the pro tempore presidency in 2023 – and also on behalf of Cuba, the head of state arrived in New York on Sunday at John F. Kennedy International Airport with his partner, Lis Cuesta Peraza, and at the head of the delegation of the Caribbean country.

He attends in his capacity as president of the G77 to present the results of the recently concluded summit of the group in Havana.

According to the program planned for these days, President Díaz-Canel Bermúdez will be the sixth speaker in the high-level segment, when this September 19 the debate opens in the General Assembly of the United Nations.

In addition, their voice will be heard at a time when cardinal issues for the planet will be addressed, such as the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals, the confrontation of climate change, international efforts in health and financing paths for development.

These will be days in which the Caribbean island will be able to share its experience in confronting COVID-19, and will take part in the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Group of 77 and China, which will be inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Cuba.

Other high-level events will also take place on issues of transcendental importance for humanity such as universal health coverage and the fight against tuberculosis, and a ministerial meeting preparatory to the Summit of the Future, to be held at the United Nations in 2024.

During his stay in the U.S. city, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba will also hold meetings with representatives of U.S. civil society.

The delegation accompanying President Díaz-Canel is made up of the member of the Political Bureau and Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla; the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda; the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Gerardo Peñalver Portal, and other officials of the Foreign Ministry.
