News circulated on social media of an ongoing coup attempt in Congo-Brazzaville against President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Minister Thierry Mongala said in a tweet on his personal page on the social networking site "X", on Sunday evening, "The government denies these rumors, confirms that there will be no military coup in Brazzaville, and calls on public opinion to calm down, and citizens to practice their usual activities."

Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, 79, left the capital Brazzaville for New York to attend the UN General Assembly, while reports suggested the army had taken control of key facilities in the capital.

The Congolese presidency later released a video of the president arriving at the Congolese mission to participate in the work of the United Nations General Assembly.

This comes at a time when Africa is witnessing many military coups, such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and finally Gabon.
