To intercept drones, the Russians use short-range complexes, such as the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system, the Tor-M2 air defense system. Once they were considered powerful, but now it is not, other, more modern, drones and air defense systems have appeared.
This opinion was expressed by military-political observer Oleksandr Kovalenko.
"To intercept small-sized objects, such as UAVs, not S-300 or S-400 are used at all, but short-range complexes. These include the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system, the Tor-M2 air defense missile system and others. But the above are considered the most modern. They are considered," his post read.
He recalled that the Torm-M2 air defense system has an effective coverage radius of 12 km, 132 units were produced. The Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system has an effective coverage radius of 15 km, 116 km are produced.
In Ukraine, the Russians, according to official data, lost 27 Tor-M1/2 and 18 Pantser-S1 air defense systems. According to unverified data, the ROF losses are more than 50 Tor-M1/2 and 45 Pantsir-S1 air defense systems.
"That is, losses of almost 50% of the total number + stay in the combat zone at least half of those remaining. This is a vivid example of what is happening now with Russian air defense. It becomes non-functional. The production of these complexes is not the rolling out of T-62 or T-54/55 from storage, it is a complex and time-consuming process. Even recovery from storage is not easy and time-consuming," the expert explained.
According to him, Russia remains without echelons of short and medium range. Large numbers of S-300 and S-400 are useless against "small objects that need to be intercepted by completely different systems."
"Thus, Russian airspace is exposed and turned into a colander. Although, no, it's a small colander, there are whole craters, through tunnels in the Russian air defense," he said.
