Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to take a step towards NATO membership at the summit by abandoning the MAP.
The Minister announced this on the Web on June 16.
Kuleba informed that he had held a conversation with Stoltenberg and thanked him for his efforts to make the July summit in Vilnius successful for NATO and Ukraine.
"I also stressed the importance of taking a step towards Ukraine's membership, in particular, by abandoning the MAP (membership plan – ed.). It is time to coordinate NATO's decision with the new reality," the Ukrainian Foreign Minister stressed.
NATO Summit in Vilnius: what decisions can be taken
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on NATO members at the summit in Vilnius to give the state a clear "signal" that they want to see it in the Alliance. The Head of State also urged to provide security guarantees for the period when Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO.
As Stoltenberg said on June 12, Ukraine can count on security guarantees at the summit, but one should not wait for an official invitation to NATO membership.
According to The New York Times, Stoltenberg offered US President Joe Biden a "compromise" on Ukraine's membership in the Alliance: so that the state does not go through the standard procedure for applicants for membership, because it has experience of a major war with Western equipment and training. According to the NYT, Biden's aides are inclined to offer Ukraine instead of NATO membership an "Israeli model" of security guarantees in the form of 10-year commitments of military assistance.
According to Axios, Biden supports Stoltenberg's proposal to exempt Ukraine from implementing the NATO Membership Action Plan.
